As always, Tom wants to know…
WHAT’S IN PHILLIP’S BACKPACK?
Of all of the many friends of The MJ Project, Phillip is likely its most prodigious reader, so Tom recently took the opportunity to corner this world class book lover and pick his brain.
T: Where do you keep all of your books?
P: The question is, where DON’T I keep them?
T: Your last two requests were from the Jim Butcher series and Prometheus Rising. Care to explain yourself?
P: I’ve been reading The Dresden Files for about five years now. It’s a series about a wizard named Harry Dresden who works as a P.I. in Chicago.
T: A wizard…
P: To me, the writing is fantastic. It’s told in first person and gives great insight into the character as it sucks you into the action and intrigue. Right now, it’s definitely my favorite piece of fiction.
T: And Prometheus Rising?
P: Robert Anton Wilson interests me for an entirely different reason, which is my curiosity about psychology, Magick, and consciousness expansion. Basically, alternative knowledge and the occult are what led me to this book.
T: Now you’re scaring me.
P: People have misconceptions about this stuff. Magick isn’t good or evil, it’s just energy. Performing Magick is using natural forces to bring about change.
T: Oh, and Harry Dresden is a wizard.
P: Now you’re getting it.
T: Where’s your favorite place to read?
P: One of my favorites is in the bathtub while taking a long bath.
T: Aren’t you afraid the book will get wet?
P: Waterproof Kindle.
T: For real?
P: Apparently I’m not alone.
T: You like graphic novels, too.
P: Oh, yea. At the moment, I’m all about Saga and Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan. Beautiful and amazingly well-written characters. I’m also enjoying a Japanese manga called Beastars that has the same appeal.
T: What else is on your mind?
P: Aren’t you going to ask me why I like to read?
T: To be honest, it hadn’t occurred to me.
P: That’s weird.
T: Maybe next time?
P: Will there be a next time?
T: Oh, yea…
