PROJECT RESILIENCE: STORIES FROM THE FRONT

Chapter One – A Lesson in Kindness

Rodolfo, a friend of The MJ Project for years now, was in a bind. A Biology and Chemistry major on the fast track to graduation, he was suddenly faced with a pandemic, a near-empty campus, and $100 in his pocket.

“Honestly, it’s been dreadful. It’s an impasse I find myself at currently, and I’m not sure what to do,” Rodolfo shared with us at the time.

After covering a few bills, he was down to $20.

“A friend of mine was not doing well and told me she only had $6 left in the bank, so I gave her half of what I had. With what was left, I bought some bread, ham, and cheese – one week‘s worth of lunches.”

And the $10 Rodolfo so selflessly gave to his friend?

“It really seemed to brighten up that week for her.”

Checking his email a short while later, this MJ recipient for our emergency Creative Grant was in for the surprise of a lifetime, the award from his school of a $5000 scholarship to ensure the completion of his education.

Coincidence? We think not.

“Adversity does not build character, it reveals it.” James Lane Allen
